Day 6 – Transiting the Panama Canal

Gatun Locks

Gatun Locks

On Thursday morning January 9th, we began the transit across Panama. We arrived at the Gatun Locks around 6:30 AM. The whole evolution would take about 11 hrs. to travel the 50 miles of the Isthmus.  Announcements were made throughout  the day as we progressed through the canal – from Gatun Locks, the Gatun Lake, the Culebra Cut( the narrowest part of the canal), Pedro Miguel Locks, Miraflores Lake, Miraflores Locks,  and out to the Pacific Ocean near Balboa.

On board,  there were numerous activities to celebrate the 100th  anniversary of the canal. A Panamanian market was set up on the Lido deck with specialty Panamanian dishes and drinks.  along with a “sidewalk sale” of Panamanian souvenirs.

My day was spent watching the progress of the transit on the forward deck, walking around taking pictures and researching the names of the wildlife in Costa Rica.
