(attempted to post Jan 24th) After 2 days of sailing and another formal dinner we arrived at Pitcairn Island. This is the island where in 1789, the mutineers of the HMAV Bounty settled to escape the British. The island today is a protectorate of the UK and the only Pacific British Overseas Territory today. Since the landings are difficult, it is impractical to land any large craft in Bounty Bay. There is a steep road that goes from Bounty Bay …

Day 13 – Lima and on to Easter Island
http://www.azpawlowski.com/wazp/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-01-14_153542_2584-300x225.jpg
We spent two and a half days in Lima. On the first day I helped Gladys find a charger for her camera battery. We took the shuttle bus from the port of Callao – about 11 miles from Miraflores in Lima where the bus let us off. Everyone on the bus rushed into the Marriott Hotel and Starbucks to use the internet. The internet on the ship is, for all practical purposes, non-existent. Too many people trying to get on …

Manta, Ecuador and sailing towards Callao, Peru
http://www.azpawlowski.com/wazp/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-01-11_145410_2471-300x199.jpg
On Saturday got an early breakfast and watched as we pulled into the port of Manta, Ecuador. I boarded the tour bus on the pier just to the left of the disembarkation point. We were not allowed to walk from the pier to town. My day long tour began by going through the town of Manta and heading South. First we stopped at a ECO sanctuary and resort, Pacoche, were we were shown how to make a traditional Ecuadorian appetizer …

http://www.azpawlowski.com/wazp/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-01-09_064314_2235-300x225.jpg
On Thursday morning January 9th, we began the transit across Panama. We arrived at the Gatun Locks around 6:30 AM. The whole evolution would take about 11 hrs. to travel the 50 miles of the Isthmus. Announcements were made throughout the day as we progressed through the canal – from Gatun Locks, the Gatun Lake, the Culebra Cut( the narrowest part of the canal), Pedro Miguel Locks, Miraflores Lake, Miraflores Locks, and out to the Pacific Ocean near Balboa. On …

http://www.azpawlowski.com/wazp/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-01-07_083412_1992-300x225.jpg
Well, went through a time change to Central time and will be changing back again before reaching the Panama Canal. I signed up for a 5 hour ECO tour which included A train ride,a canal ride and a trip to a banana plantation and processing plant. Got to see a few monkeys in trees and some birds, but was disappointed in the train ride. The train went from the banana fields to the processing plant. The route was through the …

I finally got my luggage 26 hours after it was dropped off at the ship’s terminal! It was inadvertently delivered to an empty stateroom. Just before the luggage was delivered, I purchased a polo shirt and a tee shirts – courtesy of Holland America – so I would have something clean to wear. I also found a rental tux in the room for the formal dinner on Monday night. This was promptly sent back, since I now had my …

On Board the Amsterdam ..
http://www.azpawlowski.com/wazp/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/msAmsterdam-300x146.jpg
I am on board the Amsterdam waiting to depart for Costa Rica – our 1st stop. I arrived on board shortly after noon, checked my luggage at Port Terminal. On board, I took a tour of the ship, had a “Welcome Aboard” glass of champagne and had brunch about 2:30PM. Then participated in the evacuation drill. It is just after 7 PM and I am still waiting for my luggage which was checked just 100 feet from the ship!
